Diversity Management in Recruiting



What is Recruitment?
Successful Human resource practices should discover and cater to human resource needs for the betterment of the organization. In order to do that, one of the key components of HRM is ‘Recruitment’ which can be defined as “discovering of potential candidates for actual or anticipated organizational vacancies” (Kumari, 2012).

Diversity Management in Recruitment
Today the world is moving towards recruiting individuals with diversities in aid of gaining diversity in workplace. This involves accepting and understanding different individualities such as races, ethnicities, religion, gender, disabilities, sexual orientation and so on. It is of greater importance that employers give equal opportunity to these types of diversities, so that none of the applicants are being discriminated.

Recruitment of Women
Nowadays women are equally educated just as men, wanting them to excel in the career ladder regardless of discrimination. Most of the companies today welcome women and strive to provide equal opportunity.  “Microsoft actively helps to attract, retain, and develop women around the world. Its programs focus on sparking girls’ interest in technology careers, supporting women-focused initiatives and organizations, and providing career and professional development resources for women once they are employees at Microsoft” (Microsoft.com, 2019).

Recruitment of Minorities
Focus also need to be given so that minority groups in the country are able to experience substantial improvements in their social and economic wellbeing. Once they are given the opportunity they must always feel welcome in the job without any discrimination. At FedEx “minorities account for one half of the workforce, including 14% of executives” (Goforth, 2019).

Recruitment of Disabled
Disabled employees might face difficulties in performing certain tasks unlike other employees, but there are certain job roles they could perform perfectly. Sampath Bank PLC initiated this by recruiting seven individuals with disabilities. “The results have far exceeded expectations, especially of those who thought it could never work, all seven of the hearing and speech impaired workers have so successfully integrated into the department they are no longer considered disabled” (Ilo.org, 2019).

Recruitment of Older People
This is a new trend that requires retirees to return to work when the employers cannot afford to loss specialized talent and knowledge accumulated by them. “The Canara Bank of India has sought applications from retired bank officials for recruitment to various posts on a contract basis” (Vicky, 2017). This is a great way in further utilizing talent through part time, contract or even consulting.

  2. Nice piece of work, diversified team have synerg on their works. This diversity come from the starting point recruitment. As you clearly said companies use different types individuals to their teams from gay pepole to differently able people. Our company has recruited retired formar national sales manager to train newly appointed sales manager as interim manager.

    1. Agreed on your points. Recruiting retirees is the new trend, specially when it comes irreplaceable talent and knowledge that is being identified even by your organization. Even the state sector is nowadays keen on doing this, specially in the areas of science and technology & research

  4. Despite the tradition of not recruiting women, disables and old people current recruitment trend is improved and step froward. Because its a good quality of HRM and then only they can make a balanced workforce and support the human capital of an organization and meet the goals together.
